RARE FINDAbsolutely RARE and extremely hard to find, this wonderful example of stone money, also known as rai, from the island of Yap is an amazing find! Traded over 20 years ago, this piece of stone money was brought to Hawaii, from the island of Yap, Micronesia, with the blessing of a Yap Chief. Now illegal to import, finding a piece of stone money for sale is extremely rare. MEASUREMENTS 20″ x 18″ with the hole being approximately 4.25″ deep The outer edges taper down to about 1″ thick in some places. WEIGHT 64 pounds CONDITION Very good! The pictures tell the story. No visible cracks or breaks. HISTORY Stone money is an historic currency that is completely original to the island of Yap in Micronesia. Stone money was able to retain it’s value because of the difficulty and hazards involved in obtaining them. To quarry the stones, Yapese adventurers had to sail to distant islands and deal with local inhabitants who were sometimes hostile. Many were brought from islands as far away as New Guinea, but most came in ancient times from Palau. Once quarried, the disks had to be transported back to Yap on rafts towed behind wind-powered canoes. Often times Yapese men would be hurt or even killed hiking or moving the stones up or down to the different quarry areas. Because of the way the large and heavy discs had to be transported, there was often issues and injury on the journey to and from Yap as well. Because of the scarcity of the disks, and the effort and peril required to get them, they were and still are, very valuable to the Yapese. In 1871 David Dean O’Keefe, a sea Captain from Savannah, Georgia, was shipwrecked on the island. During his 30 years on the island, he obtained much fame and considerable fortune, by gaining control of the stone quarrying. His exploits were brought to light in a 1954 film starring Burt Lancaster called, His Majesty O’Keefe. O’Keefe then traded these stones with the Yapese for other commodities such as sea cucumbers and copra. As no more disks being produced or imported, this money supply is fixed. The islanders know who owns which piece but do not necessarily move them when ownership changes. Their size and weight (the largest ones require 20 adult men to carry) make them very difficult to move around. Although today the United States dollar is the currency used for everyday transactions in Yap, the stone disks are still used for more traditional or ceremonial exchange. The stone disks may change ownership during marriages, transfers of land title, or as compensation for damages suffered by an aggrieved party. It is now illegal to remove the stones from Yap Island, with severe penalties for disturbing the stones. The last piece of stone money was quarried in 1931 by a Yapese man who had been kicked off the island. He used it to buy his way back into his clan. But the Japanese, who ran Yap from 1914 to 1945, destroyed this stone, along with thousands of others. The Japanese, ignoring the value of the stones among the people of Yap, crushed many to make roads and runways and used others to build bunkers for protection from the American attack. The U.S. bombing during World War II also destroyed some stone money or “rai”. In 1920, a Japanese survey counted 13,281 pieces of stone money. By 1965, the number had fallen to 6,600. Today far fewer are left, but no one knows the quantity for sure as many pieces were removed from the island over the years, especially by varying U.S. military personnel. The last few photos are further examples of Stone Money from Yap. The first is of giant disks of stone money in Balabaat, Yap. The following picture is of Victor Pluw of Gachpar Elementary School. He stands besides an enormous piece of stone money near the Peegachpar Men’s House. FINALLY, please note the final photo is from a RECENTAUCTION where a similar piece of stone money sold for18,400! This piece is SMALLER and weighs lessthan then the one we haveoffered here. **PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING! THIS ISA ONE OF A KIND, RAREOPPORTUNITY. PLEASE BECERTAIN BEFORE YOU BID. SHIPPING:THE SHIPPING COST ISONLY AN ESTIMATE!Because of the size and weight, ACTUAL shipping will be determined once buyers location has been determined. Please keep in mind that this is very heavy and needs to be specially packed and shipped. Actual shipping could be less OR more than estimated. _gsrx_vers_417 (GS 6.0.5 (417)) Your browser does not support JavaScript.
This item will ONLY be shipped Domestically. It is our client’s preference that it be shipped USPS Registered mail with full insurance. WE WILL PAY for the full cost of insured, Registered shipping. If you are an International bidder, please arrange for a bidder/broker in the U.S. – thank you! This auction is for a 866.3 gram (27.85 Troy Ounces) natural, Alaskan gold nugget. It comes from the collection of a private collector who has had it for many years. This is the final nugget we’re listing. The photos below show all of the details in relation to weight and size. This has a rich, lustrous color. The bottom photo shows the details you will need to calculate the specific gravity of gold versus the quartz matrix. The ESTIMATE we came up with using an online calculator is 697.6 grams of gold and 168.7 grams of matrix. PLEASE consult with a professional or do your own calculation based on the last photo. We do not acid test natural nuggets. Alaskan gold nuggets have a Karat range. For this information you can consult with an expert or research online. The rarity of this nugget is it’s beautiful size and color. The USPS Priority Registered package (which we’ll pay for) can only be insured up to $25,000.00. So, if you have another delivery method you prefer, we’ll accomodate you and pay up to the cost of the USPS Registered service for you. We can facilitate payment per your preference. ALL funds must be cleared and secure prior to any shipping action. For extra confidence, any sales agreement you wish to conduct via an attorney can be arranged by my client. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me and we will assist you! According to the website for the Alaska Mining & Diving Supply (who graciously gave us permission to link to their site), they would have this ranked as the 23rd largest nugget recorded there. AKMINING.COM – Alaska’s Largest Gold Nuggets We DO NOT accept offers to close auctions. See our auctions INSTANTLY when they’re listed! INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING We love our International customers! Please take a minute to read this and understand our policies. International shipping is regulated by the USPS, U.S. Federal laws, International laws and your country’s laws. It can get very complex. We obey all of the laws required, including accurately describing package contents and we DECLARE FULL VALUE on the Customs forms. Please do not ask us to misrepresent any information on the Customs form. Also, you can assist us by researching items your interested in before bidding. You can see prohibited items and insurance restrictions for your destination at the Index of Countries and Localities website. If items can’t be legally shipped with full insurance – we’ll have to cancel your bid. We sell items for our clients under a contract. Every item requires full insurance and tracking for our client contract and the safety of your new item. We pay the shipping insurance for you! We use Priority International or Global Express exclusively for ALL shipments. International shipping may have delays we can’t control. We ship within 3 business days of your payment. Your item may be delayed by Customs or your local postal system. We ship quickly with no extra fees for being International! There may be extra charges to your shipment that we can’t control. The following list explains the most common extra charges that occur after we ship your package. Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility. Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. If you can’t place a bid, send us a request including your location. THANK YOU! Payment is required within 7 days of auction close. After 7 days a payment reminder is sent. 24 hours later, we file an unpaid item resolution.

The reeded edge coin is a favorite among collectors Presidential Dollar Whitman acrylic display of four (4) of the popular dollar coins, includes Washington, Adams, Jackson, and Monroe. Nice gift item for a young collector Nine (9) slabbed Kennedy half dollars. Let’s say they are slabbed and described as MS70, but I assure you, they are NOT MS70 quality coins. These and a lot of these raw products were part of a huge estate collection I obtained but I don’t agree with the identification markings as shown. Just providing this information for full disclosure only. These Kennedy half dollars are dated: 1985-D,1985-P,1984D,1984P,1988P,1990P,1999D,1991D, and 1971D Slabbed Silver Eagle, described as 1988 MS70. Don’t see any spots, scratches, or distracting marks, but does have a golden ring of toning around the outer rim edge on both the obverse and the reverse of the coin Morgan Mint acrylic display of the 2005 American Bison Nickel. This is a HUGE collection and will most likely take 4-5 boxes to package and ship. I plan to ship in Priorty Mail LARGE FLAT RATE BOXES, and they are about $18.95 each. I’m guessing it will take me at least 4-5 of them to get all these coins in and packaged to prevent any damage. IF it takes more than that, the additional cost is on me. IF it takes LESS than five (5), I will refund the excess paid by the winning bidder. I do NOT seek to make any money off the shipping cost, only to cover my actual cost, so I will REFUND to the winning bidder any EXCESS paid for the shipping charges. BONUS: Throwing in ONE small vial indicating it to be PURE GOLD and ONE larger vial indicating it to be PURE SILVER. I have NO IDEA if this is accurate or not. It was in an estate purchase I made years ago and I have no clue if it’s real. THROWING IT IN JUST TO SAY THANKS and if it is real…………you WIN. If it’s not real, neither of us lose anything! I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read through this entire listing. I realize it is massive and I thank you for taking the time to review all materials available to you to determine the value of this collection to you as a collector, dealer, or otherwise. This past year has been very difficult for me dealing with medical issues where I suffered a brain aneurysm and then my husband broke his neck. We are BOTH VERY BLESSED that we were spared and gifted with our life and health. Because I must take care of some financial responsibilities with medical bills and such I have no choice but to sell some of my collection. I sincerely appreciate your consideration and providing reasonable bids. I want to make this a no reserve auction but I just can’t afford for it to go for nothing, so I have attempted to place a very reasonable reserve which shouldn’t take much to exceed! In fact, the 1894 Morgan Silver Dollar, Prestige Sets, and Silver Eagle Proofs alone are worth more than my reserve. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I also indicate that I will ship within five (5) business days from receipt of payment. I always HOPE to do so in LESS time but this collection will take some time to package properly, so it could actually take me that much time to get it ready. I sincerely ask that the winning bidder be fair with me and if I am able to ship in the 5 business days or less, please do not give me negative feedback for that. Additionally, I ask that you please not give me negative feedback for the shipping costs as I PROMISE you that I will not let you pay more than the actual costs for me shipping this collection to you. I ALWAYS work to insure anyone buying something from me is satisfied and have taken several days just to put this listing together in hopes that I have made no errors. If I have made any error, PLEASE let me know about it so I may correct it. I will SHIP ONLY to a buyer in the USA with a confirmed address and payment MUST be made within three (3) days of the listing end or the sale will be cancelled.

IN ADDITION..THERE WILL BE NO RESERVE AND THE BIDDING WILL START AT $13,500 FOR THE LOT…….GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE…….. Pamp Suisse Gold Bars are a wonderful investment. Investing in any type of gold is usually a good decision, and bars are no different. If you collect gold coins, adding bars is a way to increase your profits in the future, should you decide to sell. When you purchase gold bars, you get more gold for your money when compared to coins. The reason for this is that coins can be higher due to rarity, age or where the coin was manufactured. Investing in gold bars is a good investment for your future. Is it always better to buy gold bars over coins? Not always. If the gold market ever falls, which rarely happens, coins will have more value because of the factors mentioned above: Age, rarity, country of manufacture. Adding both to your collection is a good way to diversify and be sure of a secure financial future. What does Pamp in the name Pamp Suisse Gold Bars stand for? Produits Artistiques de Métaux Précieux, which is a metals refinery in Castel San Pietro in Switzerland. The Pamp trademark is accepted by traders and gold wholesalers worldwide. They pay particular attention to quality, and their brand is recognized worldwide as a guarantee of excellence. What should you know if you decide to invest in gold bars? Knowing which bars are popular with the investors in your particular area is helpful, in case you should decide to liquidate in the near future. In most cases, buying a larger bar will make it more difficult to sell. If you are going to buy a bar larger than one troy ounce, try to have a few places picked out that you can sell to when the time comes. So, have you made the decision to add gold bars to your collection? Many people who are avid coin collectors also collect gold bars. Anything gold will normally hold its value, and most times increase dramatically over a few years time. Gold is the best market you can invest in, especially in these unknown economic times. No matter what your decision, if you should decide you want to add gold bars to your investment portfolio, Pamp Suisse Gold Bars are an excellent and high quality choice.
